ECTACO’s Jetbook Ebook Reader

jetbook-ebook-readerECTACO, Inc., a New York based company, has just announced its new ebook called Jetbook reader yesterday, to compete with the recent Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader. Slightly smaller and lighter than those two, Jetbook turns away from the increasingly-established e-ink display technology: it uses a high resolution monochrome TFT display for its 5″ display screen. This approach is yet to be tested as either a step forward or backward in ereader display technology. E-ink display has been the trend for other ebook reades especially due to its superior paper-like qualities and without any backlight which makes it readable under sunlight. E-ink technology also saves tremendous amount of energy as electricity is not required to hold text and images on screen.

As their selling points, Jetbook features extensive bilingual dictionaries between English, Russian, and Polish, a dedicated monolingual English dictionary, and supports ebook contents in multiple other languages. These are made handy from ECTACO’s experiences in developing handheld dictionaries, translation software and language management technologies. Other useful features include built-in MP3 player, bookmarks, automatic page-turning, screen rotation into landscape or portrait modes, and screen view ability up to 180°. Information on its battery capacity and memory/storage size is not yet known.

Judging from the image, the hottest feature on Jetbook must be its stunningly red color (that is if you like red). If this is what you fancy, it’s available for $349.95, or £209.95 in UK.

Jetbook Product Specification:

  • Display: 5″ high-resolution monochrome TFT display
  • Language support: Extensive bilingual Russian <-> English, Polish <-> English, and English monolingual dictionaries pre-loaded, with support for ebook contents in Russian, Polish, English, and Spanish.
  • Features: Automatic page-turning, bookmarking, nearly 180° text viewability, adjustoble font and size, screen view in either portrait or landscape modes, built-in MP3 player.
  • Memory: Additional storage from SD card slot.
  • Battery: Internal Li-ion polymer battery.

HP Mini 1000 Mi

hp_mini_1000_miJudging by recent PC shipment reports, HP’s had a pretty good run in Q1, and we fully suspect that a good chunk of those sales are in the netbook category. The outfit’s Mini 1000 Mi was highly anticipated and chock full of promise, though we’re not totally convinced the whole Mi interface lived up to the mile-high hype. So, now’s your chance to tell us — did it? Are you pleased with the software? Do you feel the user interface attracts or detracts? Could the hardware use a retooling? Are you totally looking forward to the 2000 Mi (or 1000 Mii, whatever HP settles on)? Feel free to blast our your really real opinions in comments below — we’ll be listening.

Tag Heuer Meridiist

taghuer

Let’s just say that at that price, you aren’t just looking at a phone. In fact, in our hands, it feels more like a solid block of aluminum that’s masquerading as a mobile device. According to Tag Heuer, the Meridiist is made from corrosion-resistant, hypoallergenic 316L steel and the 1.9-inch 60.5 carat sapphire glass display is “unscratchable”. We weren’t allowed to test that out on the prototype we had, so we’ll leave the claim as it is. Further down, the angled keypad reminds us of the ones on the Nokia Siroccos which weren’t the best around. We tried tapping a few digits and are happy to report that the travel and tactility of the buttons are excellent.

The feel of the Meridiist is very similar to what you would get with a Vertu–that much we can say. It’s surprisingly solid, yet doesn’t weigh like a ton, though we did notice the phone is top heavy. The look leans toward a more masculine touch with its smooth angular edges. This is something which sets it apart from the Vertu range, and which will probably appeal more to men than women. Nokia 6300

nokia-6300You may have thought the days of mobile phones sturdy enough to beat a mugger about the head with were over, but the 6300 feels very solid indeed. It’s made from a combination of tough stainless steel covers and glossy, expensive black plastic.

Fortunately, the 6300 is more Van Damme than Schwarzenegger and comes in at a hard but slim 12mm deep. It’s comfortable to carry around in a jacket or trouser pocket and unlike other metallic handsets it doesn’t feel that heavy.

The 6300’s 320×240-pixel (QVGA) color screen displays up to 16 million colors and is good for viewing photos, watching videos and reading text messages or emails on. Measuring a relatively large 30mm wide by 40mm tall, you won’t need to squint when looking at it.

We were relieved to see the 6300’s keypad features large keys, making it easy to use. Our only niggle is that the four-way navigation key above the keypad feels a little on the thin side and can be awkward to press.

At the bottom there’s a small charging port that fits the new Nokia chargers, a 2.5mm headphone jack and a mini-USB port that lets you connect the 6300 to your PC, which means no more searching for the proprietary Nokia USB cable.

One noteworthy design feature is the blue lights on either side of the 6300, which glow when you have an unread text message–hardly essential, but we like it nonetheless.

TC7306u and TC7307u, New Laptops from Gateway

small_gateway-tc-series-laptopAfter releasing the MD and UC series at CES last time, which got a big applause from the reviewers, this time Gateway launched another laptop series called the TC7306u and TC7307u. I don’t why they named their laptops in numbers. It’s really difficult to memorize, different with Mac Air, Aspire or something.

Anyway, the two lappies are equipped with 15-inch LCD screen and weigh around 5.3 pounds, quite light I suppose. 1.3 megapixel webcam,WiFi and a gigabit Ethernet are there for a better and faster connectivity. The laptops are also have three 2.0 ports, a built-in card reader and a powerful Intel Core 2 Duo processor. And one more, the two laptops go with a dual-layer DVD writer for entertainment and a 6-cell Li-on battery to provide the power. Read more
